Legal Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Legal Assistant position is responsible for assisting the General Counsel and Legal team at Discovery Senior Living (DSL) with a variety of legal matters as assigned. Support the legal document process such as with contracts, letters, and regulatory filings. Assists with the organization of corporate legal documents and overall efficiencies of the legal department. Supports managers and operational field team members on a variety of multi-state legal matters impacting the organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. This list is not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Coordinates the discharge process for all company communities, including Independent Living, Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing. Drafts discharge letters and works with local counsel on collections and evictions. Coordinates spreadsheets for tracking of discharges and evictions.
  • Assists with general corporate matters and responsible for archiving corporate documents in the appropriate forums.
  • Coordinates execution of documents, including obtaining signatures and notary services.
  • Assists with due diligence requests and compiling necessary documentation.
  • Manages entity renewals and maintaining compliance records.
  • Answers and fields incoming calls in a professional manner.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships, credibility, and trust with clients, stakeholders, legal team members and other colleagues.
  • Providing general project support and administrative assistance as needed.
  • Proficiency in PowerPoint

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Three years + of related, demonstrated legal secretary functions with emphasis in corporate law and regulations, and/or healthcare industry, and/or senior care industry preferred.
  • Four-year college degree.

  • Language Ability:
    • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret legal documents.
    • Ability to effectively present information to top management and/or boards of directors.
  • Cognitive Demands:
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Computer Skills:
    • Ability to use Microsoft Windows. Must be proficient in Excel. Ability to use email and the Internet.

    • Ability to work under minimum supervision and demonstrate self-initiative and willingness to learn.

    • Must be cognitive and able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

  • Works primarily indoors in a climate-controlled setting.
